The monastery of St. Petka is located on the outskirts of the settlement of Pet jezera. It is dedicated to the Venerable Mother Paraskeva. This monumental building with its domes attracts the attention of travelers every day as they pass the bypass around Bijeljina that leads to Serbia. The monastery is female and is still under construction.
The monastery houses the particles of the Venerable Sergei of Radonezh, which the Bishop of Zvornik-Tuzla, Vasilije, received as a gift from the Russian Patriarch Alexei II.
The fertile Semberija plain is now dominated by a temple built in the Russian style, where the believing people, together with the monastics, invoke the mercy of God and the mercy of the saint in whose part it was built. The monastery is decorated with five golden domes. In Russia, it is customary for the monastery to have two parts, the lower and the upper church, because in Russia it is easier to heat that smaller, lower church in winter. Thus, the monastery of St. Petka consists of two parts. Painting of both the lower and upper churches is currently in progress. The lower church will be painted with figures of Russian saints, while the upper one will be painted in the Byzantine style with the usual compositions.
Also, this monastery is more than an endowment. By building a nursing home and a kindergarten in the monastery gate, Bishop Vasilije wants to create something that will be socially useful. This place will benefit others not only for prayer but also for the daily life of all people and all generations.
The plan is to build small churches near the monastery, around the lake, which will remind of other Orthodox peoples with their architecture and style. Thus, the whole Orthodox world would be presented in one place, as Orthodoxy in miniature.
